Main Line Cleaning
When your septic lines are clogged, it can lead to a troublesome and often nasty problem inside your home. A sink or toilet that is backed-up can begin to drain inside, instead of properly draining out through the pipes. A main septic line clog can be a big problem, but there are a few things you can do yourself to try to unclog your main septic line. Many people do not have the means or the confidence to take this project on, and will need to call a professional, like Septic Service Pro.
Read below about the specific tools required and know-how to fix a main line blockage.
- One tool that should be inside every home is a drain snake. This is an inexpensive tool that can help to unclog a septic line. Most drain snakes have a 25-50 foot cable with a corkscrew tip for snagging debris. You simply feed them down the line through your kitchen sink, bathtub, toilet, or wherever the back-up is. Once you meet resistance in the line, you pull the snake back and then move it forward again. This back and forth movement will help to unclog the blockage, but be careful not to force the snake into the blockage where it can become tangled.
- If you do not own a drain snake, you can run hot water from the tap to help unclog the blockage. It is recommended that you run water on the hottest setting for five to ten minutes. If the back-up is in your toilet, you can drain the water from the toilet tank and replace it with boiling water from your stovetop.
- Apply a chemical drain cleaner. Available in almost every department store or hardware store, this solution can be poured directly down the drain or toilet. The chemicals in the solution will help break up the clog and move it through your system.
- Use a force-ball plunger. This tool relies on strong suction to dislodge blockage from your main line. It is crucial that you have an adequate amount of water in the sink or toilet bowl and that you plunge several times before removing the plunger. You should repeat the process until the clog breaks free.
